Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Luke 10 records the mission of the seventy disciples, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, and Jesus’ visit to the home of Mary and Martha. It emphasizes the expansion of the mission and the priority of sitting at Jesus’ feet.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Names Written in Heaven: While spiritual power is remarkable, our greatest cause for joy should be our secure standing before God (v. 20). Our identity is in our salvation, not our success.
2. The Neighbor Law: Being a "neighbor" (v. 36-37) means showing mercy to whoever is in need, regardless of social or ethnic barriers. True religion is practical and compassionate.
3. The One Needful Thing: Martha was distracted by much serving, but Mary chose the "good part" by listening to Jesus (v. 42). We must ensure that our work *for* God does not replace our time *with* God.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord of the Harvest, who didst send forth laborers into Thy fields: make us instruments of Thy mercy. Teach us to love our neighbor as ourselves and to sit at Thy feet in quiet devotion. May we never be so busy in Thy service that we forget to listen to Thy voice. Amen.
