Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 5 records the miraculous catch of fish, the calling of the first disciples, and the healing of a leper and a paralytic. It emphasizes the necessity of leaving all to follow Christ and His authority over sin and physical infirmity.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. At Thy Word: Peter’s obedience—"nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net" (v. 5)—is the key to blessing. Even when human logic fails, obeying Christ’s specific command leads to abundance.
2. Leaving All: The first disciples "forsook all, and followed him" (v. 11). True discipleship requires a willingness to re-prioritize our entire lives around the person and mission of Jesus.
3. The Need for the Physician: Jesus came for those who know they are "sick" (v. 31). We must maintain a humble awareness of our need for His grace to avoid the trap of self-righteousness.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Savior of Souls, who didst call the fishermen from their nets: grant us the grace to leave all and follow Thee. Teach us to obey Thy Word even when we do not understand. Heal our spiritual leprosy and make us whole, that we may serve Thee with a pure heart. Amen.
