Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 15 contains the famous "Parables of the Lost"—the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son (Prodigal Son). It reveals God’s intense joy over the recovery of a single sinner and rebukes the self-righteousness of the older brother.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Joy of Heaven: There is joy in the presence of the angels over one sinner that repenteth (v. 10). Our hearts should beat in sync with God’s, rejoicing in the restoration of the broken.
2. Coming to Oneself: The prodigal’s restoration began when he "came to himself" (v. 17) and recognized his need. God is always ready to receive the repentant soul, even when they are "yet a great way off."
3. The Elder Brother Trap: We must guard against resentment when God shows mercy to others (v. 28). Self-righteousness is just as dangerous as profligate living if it separates us from the Father’s heart.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Compassionate Father, who didst run to meet the returning son: we thank Thee for Thy seeking love. Keep us from the hardness of the elder brother’s heart. Grant that we may always rejoice in Thy mercy and find our home in Thy house forever. Amen.
