Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Luke 6 contains the appointment of the twelve Apostles and a version of the Sermon on the Mount (the Sermon on the Plain). Jesus teaches on love for enemies, the danger of judging, and the necessity of building on a solid foundation.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Law of Love: Loving those who love us is common; loving our enemies (v. 27) is the mark of a citizen of Heaven. This radical love is the ultimate testimony to a divided world.
2. The Beam and the Mote: Before we judge the failures of others, we must address the "beam" in our own eye (v. 41-42). Humility is the prerequisite for any constructive correction in the community of faith.
3. Hearing and Doing: A life built only on "hearing" the Word will collapse in the storm (v. 49). Our security in Christ is found in the active, daily application of His teachings.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Great Teacher, who hast taught us to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us: write these laws upon our hearts. Deliver us from the spirit of judgment and grant us the wisdom to build our lives upon the Rock of Thy Word, that we may stand fast in the day of trial. Amen.
