Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 21 features Jesus’ observation of the widow’s mites and His extensive prophecy concerning the destruction of the Temple and the signs of the end times. He exhorts His followers to watchfulness and prayer to escape the coming judgments.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Sacrificial Giving: The widow gave all her living (v. 4). God is not impressed by the size of the gift but by the proportion of the sacrifice and the heart of the giver.
2. Patience in Tribulation: Jesus promises that in our patience, we possess our souls (v. 19). During times of global or personal upheaval, steadfastness is our greatest spiritual asset.
3. Living in Readiness: We are warned not to let our hearts be overcharged with the cares of this life (v. 34). We must remain spiritually sober and prayerful, ready for the Lord’s appearance at any moment.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord of Glory, who seest the heart behind every gift: grant us a spirit of true sacrifice. Strengthen our patience in times of trouble and keep us from being weighed down by the anxieties of this world. May we stand before Thee with confidence when Thou comest in power. Amen.
