Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 23 recounts the trial of Jesus before Pilate and Herod, the crucifixion at Calvary, and the burial by Joseph of Arimathea. It emphasizes the innocence of Jesus and His extraordinary grace toward those who persecuted Him.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Grace for the Enemy: Jesus prayed for those who crucified Him (v. 34). This radical forgiveness is the standard for how we should treat those who wrong or persecute us.
2. The Promise of Paradise: The thief on the cross was granted salvation through a simple cry of faith (v. 42-43). It is never too late to turn to Christ; His mercy is available to the very end.
3. The Response of Nature: The darkness and the rending of the veil (v. 44-45) testify that this was no ordinary execution. The sacrifice of Christ is the central event of all human history.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Suffering Savior, who wast numbered with the transgressors for our sake: we adore Thee for Thy dying love. Grant that we may mirror Thy forgiveness toward others and always remember the promise of Paradise that Thou hast secured for us through Thy cross. Amen.
