Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Luke 4 describes the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness and the beginning of His ministry in Galilee. After being rejected in Nazareth, He demonstrates His authority through teaching, exorcism, and healing in Capernaum.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Victorious through the Word: Jesus countered every temptation with Scripture (v. 4, 8, 12). To overcome the enemy, we must be thoroughly saturated in the truths of the Bible.
2. Anointed for the Broken: Jesus’ mission statement (v. 18) focuses on the poor, the brokenhearted, and the captives. Our ministry as His followers must reflect this same compassion for the marginalized.
3. Authority in the Word: The people were astonished at His word, for it was with power (v. 32). When we speak God’s Truth, we should do so with the confidence that the Word itself carries divine authority.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who by the Spirit didst overcome the tempter in the wilderness: strengthen us to resist the allurements of the world. Anoint us to preach the Gospel to the poor and to bring healing to the brokenhearted. May Thy Word be with power in our mouths and in our lives. Amen.
