Chapter Study & Analysis

Joshua 9 recounts how the Gibeonites deceived Israel into making a league with them by pretending to be from a far country. Because the leaders "asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord," they made a binding oath that they had to honor.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Self-Reliance: The leaders relied on their own senses—sight and taste—rather than asking God (v. 14). We must consult God in prayer for every major decision, no matter how "obvious" the situation seems.
2. The Sanctity of a Promise: Even though deceived, Israel honored their oath because it was sworn by the Lord (v. 19). Integrity means keeping our word even when it is difficult or based on a mistake.
3. Finding a Place in Service: The Gibeonites became "hewers of wood and drawers of water" for the house of God (v. 23). Even a deceptive start can lead to a place of service in God’s kingdom if there is a willingness to submit.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, deliver us from the spirit of self-sufficiency. Grant us the wisdom to ask Thy counsel in all things and the integrity to honor our commitments, that Thy Name may be glorified through our faithfulness. Amen.
