Chapter Study & Analysis

Joshua 17 details the inheritance of Manasseh and the request of the daughters of Zelophehad for their portion. The children of Joseph complain about their small lot, and Joshua challenges them to clear the mountain forests if they are a "great people."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Justice for the Individual: The daughters of Zelophehad received their inheritance according to the Word (v. 3-4). God’s law protects the rights of those who might otherwise be overlooked by society.
2. Against Complacency: When the people complained about their lot, Joshua told them to work for more (v. 15-18). We should not complain about our circumstances if we are unwilling to exert the effort to improve them through faith and labor.
3. Power over Iron Chariots: Joshua assured them that they could overcome the enemy despite their iron chariots (v. 18). No technology or earthly advantage is too great for those empowered by God.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, who art no respecter of persons: we thank Thee for Thy justice. Grant us the industry to work the land Thou hast given us and the faith to overcome every "iron chariot" that stands in our way. Amen.
