Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Joshua 11 records the northern campaign against a massive confederacy of kings led by Jabin of Hazor. Joshua defeats them, houghs their horses, and burns their chariots, effectively completing the major conquests of the land.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Not Fearing Numbers: The enemy was as the "sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude" (v. 4). Numbers do not intimidate God; we must trust His promise regardless of the size of the opposition.
2. Consistent Obedience: "As the Lord commanded Moses... so did Joshua; he left nothing undone" (v. 15). The secret of Joshua’s success was his meticulous adherence to the instructions passed down to him.
3. Eliminating False Security: By destroying chariots and horses (v. 9), Joshua ensured Israel would trust in God rather than captured military technology. We must remove anything that competes with our trust in the Lord.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Almighty Father, grant us the persistence to finish the race and the obedience to leave nothing undone that Thou hast commanded. Help us to trust not in horses or chariots, but in the Name of the Lord our God. Amen.
