Chapter Study & Analysis

Joshua 7 records the unexpected defeat at Ai. The cause is revealed as the sin of Achan, who took "accursed things" from Jericho. The chapter concludes with the judgment of Achan in the valley of Achor to remove the curse from Israel.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Impact of Individual Sin: One man’s disobedience caused the entire nation to suffer (v. 11). We must realize that our "private" sins often have public consequences for our families and communities.
2. The Deception of Appearance: Achan saw, coveted, and took (v. 21). Sin often begins with an unchecked look. We must guard our eyes and hearts against the allure of forbidden gain.
3. Victory Requires Purity: God refused to be with Israel until the accursed thing was removed (v. 12). Spiritual power and success are directly linked to our willingness to deal with sin.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, search our hearts and see if there be any accursed thing within us. Grant us the courage to confess and forsake our hidden sins, that we may stand before our enemies and walk in Thy favor. Amen.
