Chapter Study & Analysis

Joshua 5 involves the circumcision of the new generation at Gilgal, the celebration of the Passover, and the cessation of the manna. It concludes with Joshua’s encounter with the "Captain of the host of the Lord."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Dealing with the Past: Circumcision removed the "reproach of Egypt" (v. 9). Before we can conquer new territory, God often requires us to deal with old identities and heart issues.
2. From Manna to Fruit: Manna ceased when they ate the fruit of the land (v. 12). God’s provision changes according to our season; we must be ready to transition from dependence on miracles to the fruit of labor.
3. The Lord’s Side: When Joshua asked whose side the Captain was on, the answer was "Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come" (v. 13-14). The question is never "is God on our side?" but "are we on God’s side?"

FORMAL PRAYER

O Captain of our salvation: we fall on our faces before Thee in worship. Remove the reproach of our past and lead us into the fruit of Thy promises. We submit our plans to Thy sovereign command. Amen.
