Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Joshua 23 contains Joshua’s first farewell address to the leaders of Israel. He exhorts them to be courageous, to cleave unto the Lord, and warns that intermarrying and following the gods of the remaining nations will lead to their destruction.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Cleaving to God: To "cleave" implies a persistent, intentional clinging (v. 8). Our spiritual health is maintained by a daily, active choice to stay close to the Lord.
2. The Danger of Compromise: Associating with the remnants of the nations would lead to "snares and traps" (v. 13). We must be careful about the influences we allow into our inner circle; they will eventually shape our hearts.
3. The Certainty of Consequences: Just as the good things came to pass, so will the "evil things" (judgments) if the covenant is broken (v. 15). God’s warnings are as sure as His promises.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help us to cleave unto Thee with all our hearts. Grant us the courage to remain distinct from the world and the wisdom to recognize the snares that would lead us away from Thy path. Amen.
