Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Joshua 3 describes the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. As the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant step into the water, the river stands in a heap, allowing Israel to cross on dry ground during the harvest flood.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Stepping Out in Faith: The miracle did not happen until the priests’ feet were dipped in the water (v. 13-15). God often waits for our first step of obedience before He clears the path.
2. The Centrality of the Ark: The people were to follow the Ark, keeping a distance to show reverence (v. 3-4). We must ensure that God’s presence and Word stay at the center of our lives and decisions.
3. Sanctification for the Miraculous: "Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you" (v. 5). Spiritual preparation is the prerequisite for witnessing God’s supernatural intervention.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, who driest up the rivers of difficulty before Thy people: sanctify our hearts this day. Grant us the faith to step into the waters at Thy command, trusting that Thou wilt make a way where there is no way. Amen.
