Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

Joshua 4 details the command to take twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan to build a memorial at Gilgal. These stones served as a permanent sign to future generations of God’s power in stopping the waters.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Duty of Memorials: "That this may be a sign among you" (v. 6). We are prone to forget God’s goodness; we must create "memorials"—testimonies, journals, or traditions—to remind ourselves and our children of His faithfulness.2. Teaching the Next Generation: The stones were there to answer the question: "What mean ye by these stones?" (v. 6, 21). We have a responsibility to explain the history of our faith to the youth.
3. God’s Global Fame: The miracle was done so that "all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord" (v. 24). Our personal deliverances are intended to increase the global glory of God.
