Chapter Study & Analysis

Joshua 22 describes the return of the two and a half tribes to the east of Jordan. A misunderstanding over an altar they built (the altar of Ed) almost leads to civil war, but is resolved when it is revealed the altar was a memorial of unity, not for sacrifice.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Assumptions: Israel almost went to war based on a misunderstanding (v. 12-16). We must seek clear communication and "ask counsel" before jumping to conclusions about the motives of others.
2. Zeal for Purity: The western tribes were willing to fight to keep the nation from apostasy. We should have a holy zeal for the purity of the faith, tempered by a willingness to listen.
3. Symbols of Unity: The altar "Ed" was a witness that the Lord is God (v. 34). We should cherish the shared history and symbols that unite the body of Christ across different boundaries.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of peace, grant us the wisdom to resolve conflicts with grace and truth. Deliver us from rash judgments and help us to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Amen.
