Chapter Study & Analysis

Romans 1 introduces Paul’s mission to Rome and establishes the central theme: the Gospel as the power of God for salvation. It then transitions into a sobering indictment of humanity’s rebellion, idolatry, and moral decline as a result of rejecting the Creator.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Unashamed of the Gospel: Paul declares the Gospel is the power of God (v. 16). We must never apologize for the Truth, even in a culture that finds it offensive, for it is the only means of salvation.
2. The Witness of Creation: God’s power is clearly seen in the things that are made (v. 20). Ignorance is no excuse for unbelief; nature itself points us to the eternal Power and Godhead.
3. The Consequence of Idolatry: When society stops worshiping God, it begins to worship the creature (v. 25). Moral confusion is often a direct result of spiritual abandonment of the true God.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, who hast revealed Thy righteousness in the Gospel of Thy Son: grant that we may never be ashamed of Thy Truth. Open our eyes to see Thy glory in creation and keep our hearts from the darkness of idolatry, that we may live by faith from first to last. Amen.
