Chapter Study & Analysis

Romans 2 addresses the self-righteous and the religious, warning that God’s judgment is based on truth and impartiality. Paul argues that having the Law is not enough; true circumcision is a matter of the heart, performed by the Spirit.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Avoiding Moral Superiority: Those who judge others while doing the same things are without excuse (v. 1). We must examine our own hearts before critiquing the moral failures of our neighbors.
2. The Kindness of Repentance: It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance (v. 4). We should not mistake God’s patience for His approval, but use His mercy as an opportunity for genuine change.
3. Authentic Faith: Being religious on the outside does not satisfy God’s requirements (v. 28-29). Our priority must be an internal transformation that seeks praise from God rather than from men.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Judge of all the earth, who renderest to every man according to his deeds: deliver us from the spirit of hypocrisy. Grant us a circumcised heart that loves Thy Law in truth, and let Thy goodness lead us to a daily life of sincere repentance. Amen.
