Chapter Study & Analysis

Romans 14 counsels the church on how to handle "doubtful disputations" regarding diet and sacred days. Paul emphasizes that the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Accountability to God: Every one of us shall give account of himself to God (v. 12). Because of this, we should be less concerned with judging our brother and more concerned with our own standing before the Lord.
2. Avoiding Stumblingblocks: We must be careful not to use our Christian liberty in a way that causes a weaker brother to fall (v. 13). Love often requires us to limit our own freedom for the sake of another’s conscience.
3. Living for the Lord: Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s (v. 8). This perspective simplifies our choices; the goal of every action should be to please Him rather than ourselves.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord of Peace, help us to follow after the things which make for peace and things wherewith one may edify another. Grant us the maturity to handle our differences with charity and to live every day as unto Thee, our only Judge and Master. Amen.
