Chapter Study & Analysis

Romans 6 addresses the question of whether grace encourages sin. Paul argues that because believers have died to sin and been raised with Christ, they are no longer slaves to sin but are now "servants of righteousness" walking in newness of life.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Dead to Sin: We must "reckon" ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin (v. 11). Holiness begins with a change in our identity; we no longer belong to our old master.
2. Yielding to God: We are called to yield our "members" (our bodies and minds) as instruments of righteousness (v. 13). Every day is a choice of who we will serve with our physical and mental faculties.
3. The Choice of Wages: The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life (v. 23). This serves as a constant reminder of the gravity of our choices and the infinite value of God’s free gift.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, who hast raised Thy Son from the dead: grant that we also may walk in newness of life. Let not sin reign in our mortal bodies, but help us to yield ourselves unto Thee as those that are alive from the dead, for Thy service and glory. Amen.
