Chapter Study & Analysis

Romans 5 explores the benefits of justification: peace with God, joy in suffering, and the certainty of hope. It contrasts the fall of Adam, which brought death to all, with the work of Christ, whose one act of righteousness brings life to all who receive Him.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Peace with God: Being justified by faith, we have "peace with God" (v. 1). This is not just a feeling, but a permanent legal standing; the war between us and our Creator is over.
2. The Purpose of Tribulation: Suffering is not a sign of God’s absence, but a tool He uses to produce patience, experience, and hope (v. 3-4). We can rejoice in trials because of what they are accomplishing in us.
3. The Abundance of Grace: Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound (v. 20). No matter how deep our failure, the grace of Christ is always deeper and more powerful to restore.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, by whom we have now received the atonement: we thank Thee for the peace that passes understanding. Grant that Thy love, shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, may sustain us in every tribulation, until we reign in life by the one, Jesus Christ. Amen.
