Chapter Study & Analysis

Revelation 9 describes the fifth and sixth trumpets, involving the opening of the bottomless pit and the release of demonic forces and a massive army. Despite the severity of these plagues, those who remain on earth do not repent of their idolatry and murders.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Nature of Evil: The demonic locusts and the army of horsemen show the destructive intent of the enemy (v. 1-11). We must put on the whole armor of God to stand against spiritual wickedness.
2. The Hardness of the Heart: Despite clear signs of divine judgment, many continue in their rebellion (v. 20-21). We should pray for a soft heart that responds to God’s correction rather than hardening against it.
3. Boundaries of Evil: The enemy can only go as far as God permits (v. 4). Our security is not in the absence of danger, but in the presence of God’s restrictive hand over evil.

FORMAL PRAYER

Deliver us, O Lord, from the powers of darkness and the snares of the bottomless pit. Grant us a spirit of repentance, that we may turn from all idols to serve Thee, the living and true God, with a pure heart. Amen.
