Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Revelation 2 contains the first four letters to the churches in Asia: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, and Thyatira. Christ commends their strengths but warns against losing "first love," the doctrine of Balaam, and the influence of Jezebel.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Maintaining First Love: Like Ephesus, we can be doctrinally sound yet spiritually cold (v. 4). We must ensure our service is fueled by a vibrant, personal love for Jesus.
2. Faithfulness in Tribulation: To the suffering church in Smyrna, Christ says, "Be thou faithful unto death" (v. 10). Our goal is not comfort, but loyalty to the Truth, even under extreme pressure.
3. Rejecting Compromise: We must guard against the "doctrine of the Nicolaitanes" and moral compromise (v. 14-20). The church must remain a "peculiar people," separate from the world’s idolatry and immorality.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who walkest in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks: search our hearts. Grant us to repent where we have fallen, to remain faithful in tribulation, and to hold fast that which we have until Thou come. Amen.
