Overview
Israel destroys the Canaanites at Hormah. Discouraged by the way, the people murmur against God and Moses. God sends fiery serpents. When they repent, God commands Moses to make a serpent of brass and put it on a pole; everyone who looks at it lives. Israel then defeats Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan.
Practical Lessons
1. Look and Live: Jesus specifically used the brazen serpent as a "type" of His crucifixion (John 3:14). Salvation comes by looking to Christ in faith.
2. The Danger of Discouragement: "The soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way." We must guard our hearts when the journey is long.
3. God Gives the Victory: The defeat of powerful kings like Og proves that no giant can stand against God’s people when they obey.
