Chapter Study & Analysis

Miriam dies. The people thirst and chide Moses. God tells Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses smites it twice in anger. God declares that Moses and Aaron shall not enter the Promised Land. Edom refuses Israel passage. Aaron dies on Mount Hor and is succeeded by Eleazar.
1. Obedience must be Exact: God wanted the rock spoken to (a type of Christ once smitten, now only needing to be addressed in prayer). Moses’ anger obscured God’s holiness.
2. No One is Above the Law: Even the greatest leader (Moses) faced the consequences of his disobedience.
3. The Transition of Leadership: The death of the old leaders makes way for the new, but God’s purpose remains constant.
