Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 21 describes the aftermath of the war and the desperate measures taken by the Israelites to provide wives for the remaining Benjaminites to prevent a tribe from being lost. The book ends by noting the lack of a king and the prevalence of subjective morality.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Rash Vows and Their Consequences: Like Jephthah, Israel made vows in anger that created later dilemmas (v. 1, 7). We must be careful that our zeal for justice does not lead to unwise commitments.
2. The Need for Divine Authority: The closing verse (v. 25) highlights that without God as King, human morality becomes chaotic and destructive. We must acknowledge Christ’s kingship over every area of our lives.
3. Restoration After Ruin: Even after a catastrophic war, there was an effort to restore the broken tribe. God’s heart is always for the preservation and restoration of His people, even through their failures.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, be Thou our King. Deliver us from the chaos of doing what is right in our own eyes. Grant us the wisdom to build up what has been broken and to walk in the light of Thy sovereign Truth. Amen.
