Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 4 recounts the story of Deborah, the prophetess and judge, and Barak. Together they lead Israel against Jabin and his commander Sisera. The victory is secured when Jael, a woman, kills Sisera in her tent with a tent peg.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Gift of Leadership: Deborah’s wisdom and Barak’s military action show that God uses diverse roles to achieve victory. We should honor the various gifts God places within His people.
2. The Risk of Hesitation: Because Barak hesitated to go without Deborah, the honor of the victory went to a woman (v. 9). When God gives a clear command, delayed obedience results in a loss of reward.
3. God’s Timing in Victory: God "discomfited Sisera" (v. 15). While we must do our part, the confusion of the enemy and the timing of the breakthrough belong to the Lord.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, grant us the wisdom of Deborah and the courage to follow Thy call without hesitation. We thank Thee that victory belongs to the Lord, and we trust in Thy sovereign hand to overcome our foes. Amen.
