Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Judges 1 describes the incomplete conquest of Canaan after Joshua’s death. While Judah has some success, many tribes fail to drive out the inhabitants, choosing to dwell among them or put them under tribute, setting the stage for future spiritual compromise.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Danger of Incomplete Obedience: Israel’s failure to fully clear the land (v. 21, 27-33) led to their eventual downfall. We must address "small" areas of compromise in our lives before they become major strongholds.
2. God’s Initial Guidance: The book begins with Israel asking God who should go up first (v. 1). Consultation with God is the correct starting point, but it must be followed by persistent action.
3. The Cycle of Influence: By allowing the Canaanites to remain, Israel allowed themselves to be influenced by their culture. We must be vigilant about the environments we permit ourselves to stay in.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, grant us the persistence to finish the work Thou hast started in us. Deliver us from the temptation to settle for incomplete victories and give us the strength to remove every idol from our hearts. Amen.
