Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 14 recounts Samson’s desire for a Philistine woman in Timnath, the killing of a lion with his bare hands, and the riddle he proposed at his wedding feast, which led to further conflict with the Philistines.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Unbridled Desire: Samson followed his eyes rather than his calling (v. 3). When our emotions and desires are not submitted to God, they lead us into unnecessary conflict and compromise.
2. Strength and Weakness: Samson had physical strength but lacked moral self-control. True greatness is measured by the mastery of one’s own spirit rather than outward feats of power.
3. God’s Sovereignty Over Failures: Even in Samson’s poor choice, God was "seeking an occasion against the Philistines" (v. 4). God can use our imperfect lives to fulfill His plans, though we suffer for our errors.

FORMAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, grant us mastery over our desires and wisdom in our relationships. Help us to use the strength Thou hast given us for Thy purposes, and keep us from the paths of compromise. Amen.
