Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Judges 13 begins the story of Samson with the appearance of the Angel of the Lord to Manoah and his wife. Samson is set apart from birth as a Nazarite to begin the deliverance of Israel from the Philistines.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Set Apart for a Purpose: Samson’s Nazarite vow (v. 5) involved specific boundaries (no wine, no haircut). Holiness often involves "saying no" to common things to be ready for God’s special tasks.
2. Parental Responsibility: Manoah’s prayer, "Teach us what we shall do unto the child" (v. 8), is a model for parents. We must seek God’s guidance on how to raise our children for His service.
3. The Wonder of God’s Name: The Angel’s name was "Secret" or "Wonderful" (v. 18). We must never lose our sense of awe and mystery regarding the nature and presence of God.
