Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 10 mentions the judges Tola and Jair, followed by another period of apostasy. When Israel cries out under Philistine and Ammonite oppression, God initially refuses to help, telling them to cry to their idols, leading to a deeper repentance.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Repeated Sin: Israel’s return to many gods led to severe oppression (v. 6-9). Each cycle of sin hardens the heart and complicates the recovery.
2. Genuine Repentance: God’s refusal (v. 13-14) forced Israel to put away their idols and serve the Lord (v. 16). Sometimes God allows us to feel the weight of our choices until our repentance is sincere and active.
3. God’s Compassion: Despite their history, God’s "soul was grieved for the misery of Israel" (v. 16). Even in His justice, God’s heart is moved by the suffering of His people when they turn back to Him.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, forgive our repeated wanderings. Grant us a repentance that is not just in words, but in putting away every idol. We thank Thee for Thy great compassion which is moved by our misery. Amen.
