Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 5 is the "Song of Deborah and Barak," a poetic celebration of the victory over Sisera. It praises the tribes that volunteered to fight, rebukes those who remained idle, and concludes with a prayer for God’s enemies to perish.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Blessing of Volunteering: "Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves" (v. 2, 9). God delights in a heart that serves without compulsion.
2. The Curse of Indifference: The inhabitants of Meroz were cursed because they "came not to the help of the Lord" (v. 23). Neutrality in the face of evil or spiritual need is a serious offense in God’s eyes.
3. The Glory of God’s Friends: The chapter ends wishing that those who love God may be as the "sun when he goeth forth in his might" (v. 31). Living for God leads to a life of increasing light and strength.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, grant us hearts that willingly offer themselves for Thy work. Deliver us from the sin of indifference and let our lives shine as the sun in its strength as we walk in Thy love. Amen.
