Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 6 introduces Gideon during the Midianite oppression. An Angel of the Lord calls him a "mighty man of valour" while he is hiding in a winepress. Gideon destroys his father’s altar of Baal and asks for the sign of the fleece to confirm God’s will.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God’s View of Our Potential: God called Gideon a "mighty man of valour" (v. 12) while he was still fearful. God sees what we can become through His grace, not just our current state.
2. Cleaning Our Own House First: Before Gideon could deliver Israel, he had to destroy the idols in his own family (v. 25-27). Personal and family reformation is the prerequisite for public leadership.
3. Seeking Assurance: While God is patient with our doubts (v. 36-40), the goal of asking for "signs" should be to strengthen our obedience, not to delay it.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, who seest us not as we are, but as we shall be in Thee: grant us the courage to tear down the idols in our own lives. Strengthen our weak faith and lead us by Thy Spirit to do Thy will. Amen.
