Chapter Study & Analysis

Ruth 1 begins with a famine in Bethlehem, leading Elimelech’s family to Moab. After the death of her husband and sons, Naomi decides to return home. Her daughter-in-law Ruth famously refuses to leave her, swearing a vow of lifelong loyalty to Naomi and her God.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Beauty of Loyalty: Ruth’s vow, "Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God" (v. 16), is a pinnacle of committed love. True friendship and faith involve sticking together during "bitter" seasons of life.
2. Dealing with Bitterness: Naomi changed her name to Mara, meaning "bitter" (v. 20). While it is honest to acknowledge our pain, we must be careful not to let temporary circumstances define our permanent identity.
3. Returning to the House of Bread: Bethlehem means "House of Bread." No matter how far we wander in seasons of "famine," there is always a path back to God’s provision through repentance and return.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, grant us the steadfast heart of Ruth to cleave unto Thee and Thy people. Deliver us from the bitterness of spirit that loses sight of Thy goodness, and lead us back to the place of Thy provision. Amen.
