Chapter Study & Analysis

Judges 8 recounts the pursuit of the Midianite kings and Gideon’s dealings with the uncooperative men of Succoth and Penuel. After the victory, Gideon refuses to be made king, though he inadvertently creates a snare for Israel by making a golden ephod.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Success: After a great victory, Gideon’s ephod became a "snare unto Gideon, and to his house" (v. 27). We must be most vigilant after a spiritual triumph, lest we create new forms of idolatry.
2. Rejecting Human Glory: Gideon correctly stated, "The Lord shall rule over you" (v. 23). We must consistently redirect any honor given to us back to the true King.
3. Faint, Yet Pursuing: The three hundred were "faint, yet pursuing" (v. 4). This is a beautiful picture of the Christian life: we may feel exhausted, but we continue the work through God’s sustaining grace.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, grant us the persistence to be "faint, yet pursuing" in Thy service. Deliver us from the snares of success and keep us from setting up any idol that would draw our hearts away from Thee. Amen.
