Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Judges 3 details the first three judges: Othniel, who delivers Israel from Mesopotamia; Ehud, the left-handed Benjaminite who assassinates King Eglon of Moab; and Shamgar, who kills six hundred Philistines with an ox goad.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Empowered by the Spirit: The Spirit of the Lord came upon Othniel (v. 10). Effective service for God is always a result of His Spirit’s empowerment, not human talent alone.
2. God Uses Unique Traits: Ehud’s "left-handedness" was the key to his strategic victory (v. 15). God often uses our unique characteristics or perceived "differences" to accomplish His specific purposes.
3. Using What You Have: Shamgar used a simple ox goad to win a great battle (v. 31). We should not wait for "better tools" to serve God; He can work miracles through the simple resources already in our hands.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, let Thy Spirit come upon us as it did upon the judges of old. Teach us to use our unique gifts and simple resources for Thy glory, and deliver us from the hand of every oppressor. Amen.
