Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Judges 11 recounts the rise of Jephthah, an outcast who becomes the leader of Gilead. He defeats the Ammonites after making a rash vow to sacrifice whatever first comes out of his house to meet him, which results in the devotion of his only daughter.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Power of Words: Jephthah’s rash vow (v. 30-31) teaches the solemnity of our speech. We must be careful not to make emotional promises that lead to tragic consequences.
2. God Uses the Rejected: Jephthah was the son of a harlot and thrust out by his brethren (v. 1-3), yet God used him. Our social background or past rejection does not disqualify us from God’s service.
3. Integrity in Commitments: Despite the cost, Jephthah felt bound by his word: "I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back" (v. 35). This highlights the high value God places on personal integrity.
Practical Lessons
