Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Samuel 28 recounts Saul’s desperate consultation with the medium of En-dor. Abandoned by God and fearing the Philistines, Saul violates his own laws. The spirit of Samuel is brought up to pronounce Saul’s final doom.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Silence of God: God stopped answering Saul because of his persistent rebellion (v. 6). There is a tragic point where a heart becomes so hardened that it no longer hears the voice of Grace.
2. The Danger of Forbidden Sources: Saul sought guidance from the occult when God was silent (v. 7). We must never turn to ungodly sources for wisdom, regardless of how desperate we feel.
3. The Weight of Impending Judgment: Saul’s collapse (v. 20) shows the terror of facing the future without God. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, keep our hearts soft toward Thee. Deliver us from the snare of seeking guidance apart from Thy Word and Thy Spirit. May we always walk in the light of Thy presence. Amen.
