1 Samuel 16 Study & Commentary

1 Samuel 16 records the secret anointing of David by Samuel. After God rejects Saul, He sends Samuel to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem. David, the youngest son, is chosen, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him while an evil spirit troubles Saul.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God Looks at the Heart: Man looks at the outward appearance (Eliab’s stature), but God judges the heart (v. 7). Our value before God is determined by our internal character, not our physical or social status.
2. The Power of Spiritual Influence: David’s music provided relief to Saul’s troubled soul (v. 23). When we are filled with the Spirit, even our secondary skills can be used for healing and ministry.
3. Preparation in Obscurity: David was faithful in tending sheep before he was called to tend a nation. God uses our private seasons of faithfulness to prepare us for public responsibility.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, purify our hearts, for Thou alone seest our true nature. Help us to be faithful in the quiet fields of our lives, that we may be ready when Thou callest us to greater service. Amen.
