Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Samuel 10 records the private and public anointing of Saul. Samuel gives Saul three signs to confirm his calling, and the Spirit of God comes upon him. Later, Saul is chosen by lot at Mizpeh, though some "children of Belial" despise him.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God Equips the Called: God gave Saul "another heart" and the power of the Spirit (v. 9-10). When God calls us to a task, He provides the internal transformation necessary to fulfill it.
2. The Weight of Silence: Saul did not immediately boast about his kingship to his family (v. 16). Mature leaders know when to keep a matter private until God’s timing for public revelation.
3. Dealing with Critics: Saul held his peace when criticized (v. 27). Not every voice of opposition deserves a response; sometimes silence is the greatest sign of strength.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us. Equip us for the work Thou hast called us to do, and grant us the wisdom to remain humble and silent in the face of unrighteous criticism. Amen.
