Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Samuel 11 describes Saul’s first military victory. The Ammonites threaten Jabesh-gilead, and Saul, filled with the Spirit, rallies Israel to defeat them. The people then go to Gilgal to confirm the kingdom with great rejoicing.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Righteous Indignation: Saul’s anger against injustice was fueled by the Spirit (v. 6). There is a time for godly anger that leads to decisive action for the sake of the oppressed.
2. Unity in Action: The fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out "with one consent" (v. 7). Unity is a gift from God that makes victory possible.
3. Mercy in Victory: After the battle, Saul refused to execute those who had previously mocked him (v. 13). Success should always be tempered with mercy.
