Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Samuel 23 shows David’s continued faithfulness in saving the city of Keilah, despite Saul’s pursuit. David continually "enquired of the Lord," and Jonathan finds David in the wilderness to "strengthen his hand in God."
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Seeking God’s Direction: David refused to move without asking God first (v. 2, 4). Consistent consultation with God is the only way to navigate a life of constant pressure.
2. Ingratitude from Those We Help: The people of Keilah were willing to betray David after he saved them (v. 12). We must serve others for God’s sake, not for their appreciation.
3. Strengthening Others: Jonathan’s visit to the wilderness (v. 16) is a beautiful model of ministry. Sometimes the greatest thing we can do is simply help a friend find their strength in God again.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Teach us to enquire of Thee in all things, O Lord. May we be like Jonathan, seeking out the weary to strengthen their hands in Thee. Protect us from betrayal and keep us faithful in our service. Amen.
