Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Samuel 19 details Saul’s open attempts to kill David. Despite Jonathan’s intervention and Michal’s help, David is forced to flee and seek refuge with Samuel at Ramah, where the Spirit of God even overwhelms Saul’s messengers.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God’s Protection in Danger: Multiple times Saul tried to pin David to the wall, but David escaped (v. 10). When we are in God’s will, we are immortal until our work is done.
2. Loyalty to Truth over Family: Jonathan and Michal risked Saul’s wrath to do what was right (v. 4, 11). Our primary loyalty must always be to God’s anointed and His truth.
3. The Power of God’s Presence: Saul’s messengers and Saul himself were stopped by the prophetic atmosphere at Ramah (v. 20-24). God can neutralize any enemy through the power of His Spirit.

FORMAL PRAYER

Be Thou our refuge and our fortress, O God. When enemies rise against us, hide us under the shadow of Thy wings and let Thy Spirit be a wall of fire around us. Amen.
