Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Samuel 20 recounts the emotional parting of David and Jonathan. They confirm their covenant, and Jonathan uses a sign with arrows to warn David of Saul’s deadly intent, forcing David into a life of exile.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Sacrificial Friendship: Jonathan was willing to forfeit his own throne to support David (v. 31). This foreshadows Christ, who laid aside His glory for our sake.
2. Dependence on God’s Guidance: David and Jonathan sought God’s direction in their secret meeting. In times of crisis, our first instinct should be to seek godly counsel.
3. The Reality of Sorrow: The two friends wept together (v. 41). Godly men are not afraid of emotion; there is a time for mourning the losses that come with following God’s call.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Thank Thee, Lord, for the gift of godly friends who speak truth to us in our darkest hours. Help us to be faithful to our commitments and to love with the same selflessness we see in Thy Son. Amen.
