Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Samuel 1 recounts the story of Hannah, a barren woman who prays fervently for a son. God answers her prayer, and she gives birth to Samuel, whom she dedicates to the Lord’s service in the Tabernacle at Shiloh under Eli the priest.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Power of Persistent Prayer: Hannah poured out her soul before the Lord in her distress (v. 15). God hears the cries of the broken-hearted and responds to sincere, desperate prayer.
2. Keeping Vows to God: Hannah promised to give her son back to the Lord and she fulfilled it (v. 28). Faithfulness involves honoring our commitments to God even when it requires great personal sacrifice.
3. Finding Peace Before the Answer: After praying, Hannah’s countenance was "no more sad," even before she knew she was pregnant (v. 18). Peace comes from leaving our burdens at God’s feet.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord of hosts, who lookest upon the affliction of Thy servants: grant us the grace to pray with fervor and to trust in Thy timing. May we, like Hannah, dedicate the best of our lives and our families to Thy service. Amen.
