Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Samuel 18 describes the beginning of David’s life in Saul’s court. A deep friendship forms between David and Jonathan, but Saul becomes consumed with jealousy as David’s fame grows through his military successes.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Poison of Comparison: Saul’s downfall was triggered by a song comparing him to David (v. 7-8). Comparison is the thief of joy and the root of murderous jealousy.
2. Wisdom in Success: David "behaved himself wisely" in all his ways (v. 14). Success requires more character than failure does; we must remain humble and prudent when God prospers us.
3. Covenant Friendship: The bond between David and Jonathan (v. 3) shows the importance of godly community that supports us even when circumstances are difficult.

FORMAL PRAYER

Keep us, O Lord, from the snare of jealousy. Grant us the wisdom to handle success with humility and the grace to rejoice in the blessings Thou bestowest upon others. Amen.
