Chapter Study & Analysis

John 9 records the healing of the man born blind. The miracle serves as a physical illustration of spiritual illumination, contrasting the man’s growing faith with the increasing spiritual blindness of the Pharisees.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Purpose in Suffering: Jesus rejects the idea that all suffering is a direct result of personal sin (v. 3). Instead, trials are opportunities for the works of God to be made manifest.
2. The Progression of Faith: The blind man moves from seeing Jesus as "a man" to "a prophet" and finally to "Lord" (v. 38). True faith is a journey of increasing revelation.
3. Spiritual Blindness: The most dangerous state is claiming to "see" while rejecting the Light (v. 41). Intellectual pride is often the greatest barrier to spiritual sight.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Divine Physician, who didst give sight to the man born blind: open the eyes of our understanding. May our trials become the stage for Thy glory. Preserve us from the pride that leads to blindness, and grant us the courage to confess Thee as Lord before all people. Amen.
