Chapter Study & Analysis

John 11 presents the climactic seventh sign: the raising of Lazarus from the dead. This miracle serves as a profound demonstration of Jesus’ power over the ultimate human enemy and acts as the immediate catalyst for the Sanhedrin’s decision to put Him to death.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Resurrection and the Life: Jesus does not just "give" life; He *is* the Life (v. 25). This shifts our hope from a distant future event to a present relationship with a Person who has already conquered the grave.
2. Divine Empathy: "Jesus wept" (v. 35) reveals that God is not indifferent to human suffering. Even when He knows the outcome is victory, He deeply participates in the sorrow of His people.
3. Removing the Stone: Jesus commands others to remove the stone (v. 39). This teaches that while only God can give life, He often requires our cooperation in removing the obstacles of unbelief and tradition.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Victor over Death, who by Thy word didst call Lazarus from the tomb: speak life into the dead places of our souls. In our moments of deepest grief, remind us that Thou art the Resurrection and the Life. Grant us the faith to remove every stone of doubt, that Thy glory may be manifested in our mortal bodies. Amen.
