Chapter Study & Analysis

John 16 discusses the work of the Holy Spirit in the world and the transition from sorrow to joy. Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure, promising that the Spirit will convict the world and guide the church into all truth.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Convicting Work of the Spirit: The Spirit’s role is to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (v. 8). This reminds us that it is not our job to "force" conviction; that is the Spirit’s divine office.
2. Sorrow Turned to Joy: The metaphor of childbirth (v. 21) shows that the believer’s pain is never meaningless; it is the labor that precedes a new and lasting joy.
3. The Victory over the World: "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (v. 33). This is the ultimate war-cry for the suffering church; the battle is already won.

FORMAL PRAYER

Spirit of Truth, who proceedeth from the Father: guide us into all truth and show us things to come. In our times of tribulation, remind us of the victory of our Lord, that our sorrow may be turned into joy. Grant us the courage to be of good cheer, knowing that the Prince of this world is judged. Amen.
