Chapter Study & Analysis

John 20 describes the empty tomb and the resurrection appearances to Mary Magdalene, the ten disciples, and finally Thomas. It culminates in the purpose statement of the entire Gospel: that through believing, we might have life in His name.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Seeing and Believing: Thomas required touch, but Jesus blesses those who have "not seen, and yet have believed" (v. 29). This is the position of the modern believer, walking by faith and not by sight.
2. The Apostolic Commission: "As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you" (v. 21). Our mission is a continuation of Christ’s mission, empowered by the same Spirit He breathed upon the disciples.
3. Personal Encounter: Jesus calling Mary by name (v. 16) shows that the Resurrection is not just a historical fact, but a personal encounter. He meets us in our sorrow and calls us by name to follow Him.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Risen Lord, who didst break the bonds of death and appear to Thy disciples in glory: breathe upon us Thy Holy Spirit. Grant us the faith of Thomas to confess Thee as our Lord and our God, and the joy of Mary to proclaim Thy Resurrection. May we walk in the power of Thy new life every day. Amen.
